HOW TO BUILD A NO DIG GARDEN

-->
I'm going to go through in detail how to build a no dig garden using the recycled apple crates we sell.
The same process can be adapted to other garden beds or even pots.

  • First thing first you need is good quality garden products, like anything in life you only get out what put in, especially when growing your own food.
These are the things you will need when building the no-dig garden bed
straw, lucerne, mushroom compost, cow n compost, organic potting mix, mollases, rock dust, worm wee, slow release fertiliser ( dinofert ), hose, watering can.

Get everything ready to go, fill a watering can up apprx 9 ltr and add 1 tablespoon of mollases to it. Cut the strings off the bales, both straw and lucerne. The bale will open up into sections we call biscuits.

Step 1. Layer the bottom of the veggie crate or garden bed with straw biscuits untill there are no gaps, apprx 100-200mm
Drench the straw in water with the hose, then add a little bit of watered down mollases, apprx 1 tablespoon per watering can
Step 2. Now add a layer of lucerne untill there are no gaps, apprx 100-200mm
Drench the lucerne in water with the hose, then add a little bit of watered down mollases out of you watering can.
Repeat untill you have 3 layers of each.
Step 3. Add 1 bag of cow n compost and spread evenly, water in.
Step 4. Fill the box with the un-opened bags of compost/manures to compress the layers and leave to incubate. The reason I do this is because I find it helps to compress the layers and really gets the layers cooking, like when you stick your hand into a wet pile of grass clippings and it's extremely hot !
Step 5. Take the un-opened bags out of the box or off the garden bed and Repeat Step 1 and 2
Step 6. Fill the box with 8-10 bags of mushroom compost or 300mm thick. Compact the compost with your hands and water in.
Step 7. Add 1 bag of cow n compost and turn it in with the mushroom compost.
Step 8. Add 2 bags of organic potting mix or 50mm layer, spread evenly.
Step 9. Add apprx 5 handfuls of dinofert, and 2 big handfuls of Munash Rock Dust and some worm wee if you have any.
Step 10. Leave for apprx 1 week to settle down and add some more organic potting mix before planting out !
